SPLIT CANE BAMBOO FLY RODS
BY DON ANDERSEN updated April 18/12 New Tapers for 2011/12 - - The Edmonton Trout Unlimited Series
For more than 30 years I've made a lot of rods using tapers that were a tad slower than these. Last year, I modified a Garrison 7'3" taper stretching it to a 7'6" and a 4 weight line and at the same time beefing up the overall dimensions a little The rod was a delight to cast. It was donated to the Edmonton Trout Unlimited organization for the Lloyd Shea Habitat Fund.. Another of the same taper was built and sold last summer. My most popular taper has been the 7'9" so this new taper stretched out to the 7'9" length and further modified to to result in 3 rods. One rod carries a 3/4, the second rod a 4/5 and the last rod a 5 weight line. The TU tapers are gone!! Surprised me but all is not lost. As time allows and rainy weather begins, I'll be working on another complete set of 7'9" rods rather than going fishing..This is of course after the two rods nearing completetion are done. I'll post pictures of them when completed. The 6'6" 3 wt. taper is a new taper to me. A honey of a caster. The other rod is a 7'9" 5 wt. TU Taper. Rod Serial # 019312 - 5 Weight This the 5 weight taper of this series of rods. Unlike the 7'9" 5 wts. I normally build, this taper is somewhat faster.
PRICE $1350 - Sold ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Click above picture for a larger image Rod Serial # 029312 - 4 Weight This is the 4 wt. rod of the Trout Unlimited Series. Although it was designed as a 4 weight, it also carries a 5 weight readily. Like all the series of rods it is somewhat faster than the rods I have built in the past.

A rod of this taper is the basis for Just How Tough are Cane Rods article found elsewhere on the site. This rod is also one of my favorite rods for stream trout fishing and gets used regularly throughout the summer.
Prive $1400.00 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() click on above for larger image The Cross over Rods Rod Serial # 059611 Took this rod for a lawn test this morning and I was really pleased. The rod throws a Cortland 444 DT%F and a Cortland 444 DT6F easily. A DT5 would be my choice for tossing dries wile the Dt6 would slow down the action to make fishing nymphs a delight. The taper is patterned after Garrison's tapers which have found acceptance by knowledgeable anglers world around. This rod is the first utilizing the swelled butt capabilities of my new Morgan Handbill. The rod also feature a full wells grip of 6 1/2" long comprised of 14 rinds for the superstitious amounst us.

When I fish the lakes, I generally have two rods strung ready to go. One with a floating line and the other with either a floater, Hover line or a rate #2 clear camo. Rod Serial # 049611 This rod is a Garrison 212 taper and was the taper I used for years on either southern Alberta rivers or lakes.
PRICE $1350.00 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Click above for larger image Rod Serial # 029611 This is a Dickerson 8014 taper that is a new one to me and from the butt dimensions, it will and does cast like a cannon. While I've heard that the taper is rated for a 6 weight, I would think that it could carry a 7 weight as well. The rod casts very well out to 75' or so.
PRICE $1350.00 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Click above for larger image Rod Serial # 019611 This rod is my favorite rod for fishing lakes. I have 4 of them. I like them because I can cast about 70' of line plus another 15>20'' of leader while sitting in my pontoon boat fishing chironomid patterns. Not only does it cast well but is capable of handling a decent sized trout. The taper is a Paul Young Para 15. Most knowledgable bamboo rod users this of this rod as a Parabolic Taper.
PRICE $1350.00 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Click above for larger image EXCERTA RODS Rod Serial # 017206 Found this rod in a corner. The customer hymed and hawed and I finally forgot about the rod. Was cleaning up the place and came by this rod. It would be a great rod for those small cutthroat streams in the mountains.
PRICE $1250.00 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Click above for larger image Rod Serial # 019311 This rod is a reworked taper of my popular 7'9" rod. Unlike the more linear taper of the original 7'9" rod, this taper is designed as a parabolic.. This slows the action somewhat allowing the rod to flex well into the butt. Parabolics are reknowned for casting a lot of line. The timing though is not for everyone.
PRICE $1350.00 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Click above for larger image Rod Serial # 018412 For those that wish a 3 piece rod for carrying convience, I made this one just for you. Utilizng a Payne 98 taper which is typically thought of as a 4 wt, I designed this one to carry either a 3 or 4 weight. I've made a number of Payne taper rods over the years and have been pleased with how each one casts. This one is no exception.
Price $1450.00 - The price reflects the extra work and ferrules required. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Click above for larger image All the above rods are FOB my shop.
